But if you catch a sunny winter day, the valley under a low mist is hauntingly beautiful. Fewer tours run, and you will have viewpoints and tasting rooms almost to yourself. Temperatures range from 5–15°C, bring warm layers. Best for: photographers and travellers who prioritise peace over perfect weather.
What to Bring to the Douro Valley
The Douro Valley in summer is hot, regularly 35-38°C. Sun hat, sunscreen, sunglasses. A water bottle (most quintas have fountains but not all tours provide water). Flat shoes, the terraces are steep, uneven, and often dusty. I've watched too many tourists in sandals slide down a vineyard slope.
